Back in the car after dinner, Kit said, “I had a very fine time, Bailey Elizabeth. Am I the first person to comment that your mom looks a lot like Martha Stewart? It was kinda weird at one point. I kept waiting for her to say, ‘It’s a good thing,’ but no dice.”

“Hmm. I guess she does—a little. Martha’s Polish too, you know.”

“Stewart is a Polish name?”

“No, I forget her maiden name, but it’s Polish. Maybe we all look alike. The sernik was good, wasn’t it?”

“Really good. What kind of cheese was in it?”

She showed a shy smile. “Twaróg. It’s tough to find, but there are a couple of small dairies that make it. Before I visit a couple of pounds miraculously gets overnighted to my parents. Weird, huh?”

“Very weird.” Kit leaned across the car and kissed her cheek. “How Polish are you, anyway? Were your parents born here?”

“Yeah, of course. So were my grandparents. But my mom’s grandparents were from Poland, along with some of my dad’s great-grandparents. I’ve got Polish blood on both sides, but it’s very thick on my mom’s. My dad has a little variety thrown in. Really exotic stuff.” She chuckled softly. “Lithuanian and Slovakian.”

“So it’s been three generations and you still eat Polish food? That’s kinda cool.”

“Oh! My great-grandmother’s only been dead for a couple of years, and she lived in Poland until she was almost an adult. She’s the one who taught her grand-daughters to cook.” Looking a little wistful, she added, “She was my favorite.”

“I think you’re the favorite.”

“No, no, that’s not true. My parents love us all equally.” She turned and gave Kit such a shy smile that she had to stop herself from pinching her cheek. “But I’ll admit I gave them a heck of a lot less trouble than my sisters did.”

Kit gave her a playful slap on the shoulder. “I can’t see you giving them any trouble at all…playing games while you waited for lesbians to show up.”

“I was a pretty good kid. Kelly gave them a little trouble, but not as much as Lisa. She was a hell-raiser in high school. Always in trouble, arrested a couple of times. Lots of drama.”

“One more reason not to have kids.”

“Yeah. Really. So when Kelly got caught smoking grass they only freaked out a little. Three years later nobody blinked when I told them I was in love with Mimi. Timing is everything.”

“I can see why you like to visit. There doesn’t seem to be much drama now. Everyone gets along.”

Bailey nodded. “Yeah. We have our stuff, like everyone does. Lisa still likes to bust our chops and Kelly sometimes acts like the forgotten middle child, but we all care for one another. Oh. Sorry about that little thing with Zack. I knew he was into politics, but I didn’t guess he’d know you. His focus is usually on making sure I have every gay right possible.” She shot Kit a suspicious look. “Are you a lot more famous than I think you are?”

Laughing, Kit said, “I’m famous for DC.
